A bold new era is coming for Ram. The American automaker, known for its rugged pickup trucks and commercial vehicles, will finally step into the SUV market in 2028. According to Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, the upcoming model will mark Ram’s official expansion into a new segment offering both traditional gasoline and range-extender plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.
Since separating from Dodge in 2009, Ram has built its reputation around powerful and dependable trucks, such as the Ram 1500 and Ram HD lineup. However, the brand’s absence in the SUV market has long stood out among competitors like Ford and Chevrolet. That’s about to change.
Filosa confirmed to analysts that the company aims to create a “more comprehensive product range,” signaling Ram’s ambition to broaden its portfolio beyond pickups and vans.
The new SUV will be manufactured at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan the same facility currently producing the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Stellantis recently committed $13 billion in investments over the next four years, including nearly $100 million to retool the Warren plant for large SUV production.
Although specific details remain under wraps, it’s likely that Ram’s SUV will share components or powertrain technology with the Grand Wagoneer, which is also set to adopt a range-extender PHEV system in the near future. The decision to offer both gas and hybrid options aligns with Stellantis’s broader strategy to combine traditional performance with electrified innovation.
Ram’s new SUV isn’t the only project in the pipeline. Filosa revealed that a new mid-size pickup truck possibly reviving the Dakota nameplate will arrive around the same time in 2028. Together, these launches represent a major expansion for the brand, positioning Ram to compete in two of the most profitable automotive segments: SUVs and mid-size trucks.
In addition to the SUV announcement, Ram fans have more to get excited about. Filosa confirmed that two SRT-badged performance models are in development, marking the long-awaited return of Stellantis’s legendary Street & Racing Technology (SRT) division.
One of these models is expected to be a reborn Ram 1500 TRX, returning with a Hemi V8 engine capable of delivering over 700 horsepower. The second model remains a mystery, though speculation suggests a street-oriented performance truck could be in the works possibly inspired by the Ram 1500 “The Dude” concept, recently unveiled at the SEMA Show with bold styling and a lowered stance.
With an SUV on the horizon, a hybrid future, and the return of SRT performance, Ram is preparing for one of the biggest brand evolutions in its history. The upcoming SUV marks not just a product launch, but a strategic move into new territory combining rugged capability with modern hybrid technology.
The world will have to wait until 2028, but one thing is clear: Ram is ready to redefine American performance and utility once again.
